Will Smith was in the holiday spirit when he hit the red carpet Monday night.
"I'm so good it's almost sad," Smith joked at the Collateral Beauty premiere, hosted at the Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City's Lincoln Center. "Right on the edge! Right on the edge!"
"It's Christmastime in New York. I think the drive here—seeing all the Christmas lights and the streets are full—that energy is starting to come up," the actor, 48, explained to E! News. "I think it tweaked me a little bit. I hit the carpet hot! My sons are here. I've got my boys, so we're having a boys' night hanging out. We're going to Collateral Beauty—get a good cry together."
The Warner Bros. drama (in theaters Dec. 16) also stars Naomie Harris, Keira Knightley, Jacob Latimore, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Michael Peña and Kate Winslet. For Smith, the movie affected him more personally than past projects. "It's about a character who experiences a loss and is searching to put his life back together. During the time of filming, I was faced with my father's mortality, and we actually had time to discuss the path of the character," he said. "I was actually using the last days with my father to prepare and understand this character. What I hope people take away from this movie is there's a whole lot of heart and soul in this film."
Collateral Beauty is "entertaining," "funny" and "helpful," Smith added.
The actor is also looking forward to spending the holidays with his family, and on New Year's Eve, he'll also celebrate his wedding anniversary with Jada Pinkett Smith. "I think it's 19 this year and 20 next year," he said, pretending to be a tad unsure. "Y'all getting me in trouble!"
Jokes aside, Smith didn't have any martial advice to share. "There's really not a secret, per se," he told E! News. "If you don't get divorced that year, you get to add one year to your marriage."
