Kensington Palace is debunking a major rumor about Kate Middleton's recent hospital stay.
One day before the Princess of Wales was released from the hospital following abdominal surgery, Spanish news program Fiesta alleged that the 42-year-old had developed life-threatening complications after the procedure and was put in an induced coma. However, those close to Kate are firmly setting the record straight.
"It's total nonsense," a Palace source told U.K. newspaper The Times Feb. 1. "No attempt was made by that journalist to fact-check anything that she said with anyone in the household. It's fundamentally, totally made-up, and I'll use polite English here: it's absolutely not the case."
The Palace announced Jan. 17 that the Princess underwent her surgery, which was planned and successful. She was expected to remain in the hospital for 10 to 14 days, according to the Palace, she was "unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."
"She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible," the statement said—referring to her and husband Prince William's children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, "and her wish that her personal medical information remains private."
On Jan. 29, thirteen days after Kate was admitted to the hospital, the Palace shared an update stating that the princess had "returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress."
"The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided," read the statement. "The Wales family continues to be grateful for the well wishes they have received from around the world."
Kate is not the only member of the royal family to have had a rocky start to 2024. King Charles III recently underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate at the same private hospital. In fact, the same day it was confirmed Kate had returned home, the Palace announced the King had been discharged as well.
