Carrie Fisher Is Surprised at Public Reaction to Harrison Ford Affair: "I Wasn't Raised That Way"

The actress recently revealed she had an affair with her famous co-star when she was 19 years old

Carrie Fisher is just as stunned as we are about her affair with Harrison Ford, but for an entirely different reason—she didn't think anyone would be stunned at all.

"I am surprised at the reaction," she told Savannah Guthrie in an interview on Today. "I don't think it's that surprising." In penning and publishing a Star Wars memoir, The Princess Diarist, the 60-year-old actress also confirmed fans' longtime wish that she and her co-star were having an affair behind the scenes. "A lot of the fans did think about it for awhile," Fisher recalled. "They made up Carrison as a word." 

To write the book, the actress returned to her 41-year-old diary entries from when she was just a teenager on location in London for the first Star Wars film.   

"I had forgotten that I'd written them," Fisher said of her personal diary entries. "I write when I'm upset. So, I was upset—it is about two months or three months of upset."

In those three months, she made note of her romantic relationship with the then-33-year-old star, who was married to Mary Marquardt with two children during filming. However, Fisher noted that she didn't consider herself to be careless. "I was not sort of a cavalier person," she remembered. "It was sad because I was so insecure…it's very raw. Obviously, I didn't expect anyone, including myself, I suppose later on, to read [the diary]."

"I wasn't raised that way," she added about carrying on an affair. "But, when you're on location, this is something I discovered—everything is permitted. I didn't know that. I haven't been on a location since." 

While both stars went on to date, marry and divorce other people. Ford and Fisher have maintained a good, friendly relationship. Having known the Oscar nominee for decades, the actress also knew that he kept his personal life private and a tell-all book may not have been the first on his list of things to do. 

"I feel really bad about doing that to him," Fisher told Guthrie. "I told him I found the journals and that I was going to publish them. He sort of went, "Lawyer!"
